So, you’ve ASKED your friend if they are contemplating suicide. What do you do with the information they gave you? You dig further. Now that we know someone is contemplating taking their life, we need to find out what we can do to protect that person and keep them safe. The way we can do this is to ask them if they have thought of how they are planning on doing it. What they are planning on using. Where they are planning on going.

The reason this is so important is that you can limit access to places and things. You can be there to steer them clear of the things they brought up to you. You can remove certain things from the house. You can make sure they stay away from certain places they mentioned. You can change the topic when speaking with them and they start fixating on these things as well.

A study at Harvard has shown that limiting peoples access to lethal means is an important part of suicide prevention. Other studies have shown a decrease in suicides when these things are removed. By removing these things it shows that you are being supportive and working to keep them safe and alive.

There were guns in the house. There were sleeping pills everywhere since I have horrible insomnia. There were knives and razor blades. All things I used at some point in an attempt to take my own life. How would it have gone those times if those things weren’t available? The person in my life at that time was all but detached from pretty much everything to do with me, included a lack of concern for my well-being and mental state.

Even if you are at your wits end with someone, at least try to help them stay safe until the proper help can be obtained. If you are good friends with someone, do the same thing, keep them safe.
