Idolizing Alcohol

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

As wet alcoholics, we placed alcohol above all other things. We felt as though we couldn’t function in society without it. While we are putting alcohol first, we are placing everything else on the back burner. We are in essence saying alcohol is more important than God. We idolize the drink. Which is a sin. When we focus more on that next buzz, instead of looking for those next words from God, we aren’t leaving any room for Him to come into our lives.

Stopping drinking opens up a channel for God to come into your life and an ability for you to put Him first. We have made that first step, we stopped drinking. The next step is to ask for God’s forgiveness and remain clear headed so that you may hear what He has to say to you from now on.

What other ways can you open yourself up to God? What other things in your life take precedence over God? You can use the same actions in other areas of your life as well and focus on putting God first.

Lord, I ask that you forgive me for placing other things above You. I know that you are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I know that you are the one who I must place my trust in. I am keeping my mind clear so that I can hear You and let You work in me. Please help me stay on the good path. Give me strength to resist temptations that would lead me down a path to putting you on the back burner and other things above you.
